A Letter of Reproach to Spanish Socialists
By Francisco Rubiales
Comrades of the PSOE:
You created the monster Sánchez who is now devouring you, and whom you have spent years feeding with your submission and your votes.
Now you find that your leader has slipped beyond your control and become a problem for Spain and for democrats throughout the world.
Pedro Sánchez took possession of the party because you allowed him to do so, because life outside the PSOE is cold and unforgiving, and because you preferred the warmth of power, salaries and privileges to any principle.
I am writing this letter because, in the forthcoming elections on November 29, you have your last opportunity to redeem yourselves and make amends for all the damage you have caused to socialism, to Spain and to the Spanish people by supporting a wretch like Pedro Sánchez.
The past few weeks, marked by the invasion of Ceuta, the incursion of Moroccan warships, the failure of public housing policy and the fatal high-speed rail accident, should have convinced you that you have handed power to a dangerously incompetent man who is leading us to the slaughterhouse.
Stay at home. Do not go out and vote for Sanchismo. Let that rebellious, healthy and democratic abstention mark the beginning of the reconstruction of a party that Sánchez will leave in ruins.
You owe that rebellion to genuine progress, to a Spain humiliated by Sanchismo, and to its unfortunate and mistreated citizens.
You have allowed him to violate the Constitution repeatedly, take control of institutions, lie shamelessly every day, engage in fraud involving contracts and subsidies, disregard ordinary party members and turn the organisation into his personal political machine.
You have remained silent over support for illegal immigrants, tolerance towards criminals and, in particular, squatters who seize homes while you look the other way.
You have driven the country's debt to insane levels, drained workers through unfair taxes that crush the middle classes, turned housing into the nation's greatest problem and allowed essential public services to deteriorate: healthcare, with ever-longer waiting lists; transport and railways, declining through lack of maintenance; and education, whose performance is worsening according to international indicators. Yet nobody truly rebelled.
You have lost allies, made enemies and turned Spain into a dirty, disagreeable and troublesome country, one that has become an obstacle in international forums.
To be a socialist in Spain today is to go through life burdened with disgrace and to be complicit in baseness, dishonour and betrayal of the nation's interests.
You have endured humiliating affronts, such as submission to Morocco, which has shaped foreign policy in recent years. And you have watched corruption permeate the president's circle and the highest levels of power: his brother convicted of misconduct in public office, his wife facing judicial proceedings, and figures such as Ábalos and other senior party officials imprisoned, under investigation or awaiting trial over alleged schemes involving commissions and public contracts. All the while, the party has been stained and stripped of its prestige.
You have disgraced the PSOE and, through your cowardice, consigned it to decades outside power. You did not rebel because life outside the party was cold and because you have become people willing to put up with anything in exchange for power, money and privileges.
You have allowed a leader obsessed with his own authority to subordinate the public interest to his political survival, polarise the country, use selective pardons and amnesties, and put pressure on the justice system whenever it suited him.
The result is a discredited party, a more divided Spain and a legacy of privileges, widespread special legal protections for officeholders, debt and deterioration for which others will have to pay.
Many socialists, including former leaders such as Felipe González, already reject Sanchismo and have taken the rebellious step that restores their dignity.
Those of you who continue to shelter in the shadow of the corrupt man in La Moncloa are now nothing but trash, because you have tolerated everything without dignity or any break with him and, above all, because you continue to support him.
